Pediatric ophthalmology encompasses all aspects of eye care for children. Our field covers the basics of prescribing glasses to advanced ocular surgery.
Strabismus is an eye muscle disease characterized by eye misalignment. It may cause double vision. Esotropia and exotropia are forms of strabismus. Treatments include glasses, patching or surgery. Eye muscle surgery helps to straighten the eyes and the procedure is done on an outpatient basis.
Amblyopia, or Lazy Eye, causes poor vision in an eye and occurs when the patient’s brain ignores messages from the eye. Strabismus, a cataract or a refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness) may cause amblyopia. Treatments include glasses, patching or drops.
Blocked Tear Duct is a condition present in some young children characterized by continuous tearing or drainage and crusted lashes. Brief outpatient procedures can be performed to open the tear duct.
pediatric cataracts are cloudy areas in the child’s lens. They may be present at birth. Congenital cataracts are often hereditary and should be removed at an early age. Intraocular lens implants can even be placed at the time of surgery in some children.
ROP is a disease sometimes present in very premature infants who have been on life-sustaining oxygen. This disease can result in vision loss or blindness. Treatments include laser and medication injection.
Congenital glaucoma is a serious ocular condition which is caused by very elevated eye pressure. The optic nerve is progressively damaged and blindness can result if not treated in a timely fashion. The classic symptoms are infants with light-sensitivity, tearing and a “cloudy” appearance to their eyes. The condition can be treated with surgery and medication.
